Applying Henna for Beginners

By Farah Syed
on August 05, 2014

Hello All!

Recently, I've been getting a lot of question on how to apply henna in a professional, clean and fast way. The trick is practice, practice and practice. When I finished my MBA I got married and wanted to start a family, as a result I put my career in information management on hold. Bored at home and with the financial stresses of being newly weds and a recent grad I decided to start my henna business.

IMO to be successful at anything, you must LOVE doing it. I love the the art of henna, it has been a passion of mine since I was a child. It's not primarily for the money (although it helps :)). That being said, how can you go from a good artist to a great one? Here are some tips;

-Practice! One technique I used was to apply henna on a ceramic plate. You can use paper but reusing ceramic plates is more environmentally friendly. I have also used mirrors and glass.

-Educate yourself! Understand the different styles of henna, this is essential when I am dealing with the vast array of cultures. Arabic, indo-pak, modern, Moroccan etc. There are a ton resources out there, just Google it.

-Watch other artists apply henna. The grip of the cone, the pressure applied, the position of your subject, their posture etc. I am in the process of creating a Youtube series that will show the various techniques. There are some great video, simply search Youtube.

-Ask me! I am more than happy to help :)

Have a wonderful day!

A dark henna stain is the dream of every girl/bride whenever she gets her henna done. However 50% of them end up with poor quality henna stain. It seems complicated however some precautions and tips can help you get the nicest henna stain ever.

  1. First of all make sure your henna paste is fresh and made with quality ingredients.95% of henna cones available at your local grocery/convenience stores are old, made with poor quality henna powder and full of chemicals. Improper storage makes that henna paste runny and damages the stain release quality of henna.
  2. Tip: You can trust on Leezee’s Henna Cones that are made with 100% natural ingredients using the finest quality henna powder and essential oils. You can shop them worldwide at
  3.  Wash your hands, arms or other body area where you intend to have your henna done with soap and warm water to remove any body lotion, Vaseline or any cosmetic. Lotion or Vaseline makes a thin coating on your skin that acts like a barrier. This barrier minimizes the henna stain absorption into your skin.
  4. Once you get your henna done, wait patiently to dry and keep it on for maximum amount of time. Longer you keep it on, darker the color would be .Generally for hands and feet I would recommend keeping it on for 6 to 8 hours. Keep it on for 10 to 12 hours for other body parts and stay away from water.
  5.  Usually henna paste dries in 15 to 20 minutes. Once it dries, dab on sugar water or Rose water and sugar mixture on you henna design with a cotton ball (mix equal parts of sugar & water/rose water). This mixture makes the henna paste moist and protect it from cracking. Moreover moist henna paste releases more stain.
  6. Once your henna design is dried and sugar water is on. You can add 3ts of cloves and 5 cloves of garlic in 3 cups of boiling water and moist your henna design with the steam. This step is optional but very effective to improve your henna stain. Keep your hands at the safe distance to avoid any accident.
  7. Before going to bed (if your henna is on for 10 to 12 hours) you can scrape it off and apply Vicks. It will keep your skin warm and stain will improve overnight. If you are planning to go to bed with the henna on, then wrap your henna design with the Hypafix tape, elastic bandage or simply with the toilet paper. It will keep henna paste in place, warm your body improve your henna stain and will keep your bedding clean. Cotton gloves can also be used for hands. I won’t recommend using cling wrap as it will make you sweaty and henna design will get mushy.
  8. In the morning you can wash your hands and apply olive oil or clove oil. However for the brides I will recommend to stay away from water for 24 hours. Just let the henna flakes off on its own and apply clove oil on the henna design area.
  9. Henna stain oxidizes with the passage of time. At first it will be light orange, then it will become dark orange and after 36 to 48 hours it will be dark brown to dark burgundy depending upon the skin type.
  10. Apply Vaseline on henna design area before taking a bath or before going for swimming. Water, soap, shampoo and chlorine fade the henna stain quickly.

I hope you will like and try to act upon the above tips to get a really nice henna stain. Please feel free to ask if you have further question or concern

Have a nice day:)

Five little preparations - A Bride to be should do before getting her bridal henna/Mehndi done.

By Farah Syed
on February 05, 2013

Hi there brides to be, today I will discuss about some little preparations that you should consider before getting your bridal henna done. Seriously, your life will be easy. These recommendations are based on my observations and experiences that I got while doing henna for my brides.

1-   Get your facials, waxing, pedicure and manicure done at least 10 to 12 hours before getting your henna done. During this time your skin will calm down and you will enjoy true softness of henna. Moreover your henna stain will get fade quickly if you get your waxing, manicure or pedicure done after getting your henna done.

2-   This advice is for those brides to be who wear their contact lenses on regular bases. Take off your contact lenses before getting your bridal henna done. Otherwise you won’t be able to touch your eyes once your bridal henna is on.

3-   Before the arrival of henna artist, wear your pajamas and be comfortable. In some cases brides to be get their henna done during the henna/sangeet party. In this case chose a party dress that is loose and easy to take off without ruining the henna design.

4-   Reduce intake of liquids, tea, soda or any other caffeinated beverages to avoided frequent trips to the wash room.

5-   Last but not least designate an assistant for yourself (friend, cousin, bride’s maid) before getting your bridal henna done. He/She will take care of your cell phone calls from your make-up artist, decorator, florist, caterer or wedding planner about last minute preparation.

Please share your ideas too. Happy wedding planning:)

Three great tips for a neat henna design

By Farah Syed
on February 01, 2013

It is understood that experience and practice make your henna art work beautiful and neat. However there are three factors that play major roll to create a perfect henna design

1-    Consistency of henna paste plays a major role in drawing a neat and flawless design. Make sure your henna paste is not too thick. In this case henna paste will not stick to your bride’s skin and your fingers will cramp while squeezing out the thick henna paste. Your henna paste should not be runny. In this case the flow of henna paste will be out of control and henna design will look mushy. Moreover bride’s henna design will smudge and resulting henna pattern will be terrible.

2-    Length of a henna cone is a key factor for making a nice henna design. Extra-large/ too long henna cones are hard to handle. Make sure your henna cone is medium sized which is easy to handle and manipulate. I would recommend ideal henna cone should be 6 to 7 inches long.

3-    Proper posture of henna artist and bride is very important to draw a quality design. Use as many pillows and cushions to support your back and level of bride’s arms and hands. Bad posture will tired you out and result will be a poor quality henna design. Happy henna artist mean’s perfect design and a happy bride.

Feel free to ask any question or submit a feedback. Have a happy weekend from Leezee’s Henna Art

Five quick tips to keep your henna powder fresh

By Farah Syed
on January 31, 2013

Henna (Lawsonia Inermis) is a shrub that grows in hot and humid climates e.g.South Asia, Africa and Arab. Dried, ground leaves of henna plant make “Henna Powder”. It is very important that you store and handle this henna powder with care to get a nice rich stain. Here are five simple tips that will make your henna powder long lasting and fresh.

1-    Do not put your henna powder in direct sunlight. Sunlight can affect the freshness of henna powder

2-    Avoid storing your henna powder near direct heat. It’s a bad idea to keep it near stove or on top of the refrigerator

3-     Henna powder container or bag must be sealed properly so that moisture cannot affect its quality

4-    It is better to store your henna powder in refrigerator, in a tight sealed plastic container

5-    Best of all freeze your henna powder in a zip lock bag. It really preserves the freshness of your henna powder.

I hope you will like these tips. Any feedback is welcome. That’s all for now and will see you soon with a new henna topic. Have a good day henna lovers:)
