Black Henna - Warning!

By Farah Syed
on August 05, 2014

Henna Friends and Fans!

I often get asked for black henna applications and i'm a little surprised at the volume of inquiries. Leezee's does NOT use black henna and neither should anyone. Black henna can be very dangerous as it contains a chemical called PPD.

What is PPD:

PPD (para-phenylenediamine) is a black chemical dye that may cause severe allergic reactions. Unfortunately, henna products are often labeled "Natural" but contain traces of this chemical. Leezee's does not use or promote black henna and we strongly recommend NOT using it. PPD has been linked to cancer, it has also been know to burn skin and cause sever reactions.

As always, if you have any questions please ask :)

Applying Henna for Beginners

By Farah Syed
on August 05, 2014

Hello All!

Recently, I've been getting a lot of question on how to apply henna in a professional, clean and fast way. The trick is practice, practice and practice. When I finished my MBA I got married and wanted to start a family, as a result I put my career in information management on hold. Bored at home and with the financial stresses of being newly weds and a recent grad I decided to start my henna business.

IMO to be successful at anything, you must LOVE doing it. I love the the art of henna, it has been a passion of mine since I was a child. It's not primarily for the money (although it helps :)). That being said, how can you go from a good artist to a great one? Here are some tips;

-Practice! One technique I used was to apply henna on a ceramic plate. You can use paper but reusing ceramic plates is more environmentally friendly. I have also used mirrors and glass.

-Educate yourself! Understand the different styles of henna, this is essential when I am dealing with the vast array of cultures. Arabic, indo-pak, modern, Moroccan etc. There are a ton resources out there, just Google it.

-Watch other artists apply henna. The grip of the cone, the pressure applied, the position of your subject, their posture etc. I am in the process of creating a Youtube series that will show the various techniques. There are some great video, simply search Youtube.

-Ask me! I am more than happy to help :)

Have a wonderful day!

Three great tips for a neat henna design

By Farah Syed
on February 01, 2013

It is understood that experience and practice make your henna art work beautiful and neat. However there are three factors that play major roll to create a perfect henna design

1-    Consistency of henna paste plays a major role in drawing a neat and flawless design. Make sure your henna paste is not too thick. In this case henna paste will not stick to your bride’s skin and your fingers will cramp while squeezing out the thick henna paste. Your henna paste should not be runny. In this case the flow of henna paste will be out of control and henna design will look mushy. Moreover bride’s henna design will smudge and resulting henna pattern will be terrible.

2-    Length of a henna cone is a key factor for making a nice henna design. Extra-large/ too long henna cones are hard to handle. Make sure your henna cone is medium sized which is easy to handle and manipulate. I would recommend ideal henna cone should be 6 to 7 inches long.

3-    Proper posture of henna artist and bride is very important to draw a quality design. Use as many pillows and cushions to support your back and level of bride’s arms and hands. Bad posture will tired you out and result will be a poor quality henna design. Happy henna artist mean’s perfect design and a happy bride.

Feel free to ask any question or submit a feedback. Have a happy weekend from Leezee’s Henna Art

Five quick tips to keep your henna powder fresh

By Farah Syed
on January 31, 2013

Henna (Lawsonia Inermis) is a shrub that grows in hot and humid climates e.g.South Asia, Africa and Arab. Dried, ground leaves of henna plant make “Henna Powder”. It is very important that you store and handle this henna powder with care to get a nice rich stain. Here are five simple tips that will make your henna powder long lasting and fresh.

1-    Do not put your henna powder in direct sunlight. Sunlight can affect the freshness of henna powder

2-    Avoid storing your henna powder near direct heat. It’s a bad idea to keep it near stove or on top of the refrigerator

3-     Henna powder container or bag must be sealed properly so that moisture cannot affect its quality

4-    It is better to store your henna powder in refrigerator, in a tight sealed plastic container

5-    Best of all freeze your henna powder in a zip lock bag. It really preserves the freshness of your henna powder.

I hope you will like these tips. Any feedback is welcome. That’s all for now and will see you soon with a new henna topic. Have a good day henna lovers:)
